Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in America, is a performer and actress. Her work as Queen Latifah on television, film as well as music has earned her several awards. This includes the Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's mother and father split after Latifah was ten years old. Latifah grew up within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is her name for stage before she was eight years old. The word means extremely delicate in Arabic. Latifah was always tall, standing 5'10", she was the center forward on her high school basketball team. She performed the hit song home from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah began to beatbox with the ladies fresh rap group. Latifah is one of the founding participants of Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group of MCs around DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. The song was sent to host Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the tune. He signed Latifah, and released her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
